Soham's Fenland market town character means plenty of brick-built Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and the unused chimney stacks on those properties are a recurring source of water ingress and unnecessary heat loss.
The streets around the town centre and out towards the Ely Road contain rows of older terraced houses where shared chimney stacks once served coal fires on both sides of the party wall. Over time, neighbours on either side have blocked up their fireplaces, and the stack above has been left to deteriorate in Cambridgeshire's wet winters. Cracked flaunching and eroded pointing allow water into the stack, and from there into the roof timbers and ceilings below.
